For One Unforgettable Summer, All Country Roads Led to Santa Clara
At the final whistle of the United States versus Bosnia and Herzegovina match, Santa Clara’s World Cup finale had one last moment left.
As John Denver’s Take Me Home, Country Roads played through the loudspeakers following the United States’ 2-0 victory, tens of thousands of fans stayed right where they were.
Americans celebrated advancing to the Round of 16. Bosnian supporters lingered to take in the atmosphere. Families, visitors, volunteers, stadium staff, and fans from around the world sang along as flags continued to wave across the stadium.
It was planned as a victory song, but what happened in the stands felt bigger than a post-match celebration.
For a few unforgettable minutes, the stadium became one voice.
That moment captured what the FIFA World Cup had become in Santa Clara. For three weeks, people arrived carrying pieces of home with them, their flags, jerseys, chants, languages, traditions, and pride. Then, for a few hours at a time, they shared those pieces of home with complete strangers.
For many visitors, Santa Clara was one stop on a much larger World Cup trip. But during those matches, it became part of their story.
That is the magic of hosting the world.
It is not just the match on the field. It is the people you meet, the places you discover, the songs you sing, and the memories you carry home after the final whistle.
A Summer the World Came to Santa Clara
For three weeks, Santa Clara welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors as Levi’s® Stadium hosted six FIFA World Cup matches.
Before the tournament began, the Bay Area Host Committee projected the FIFA World Cup would generate between $480 million and $630 million in economic impact across the Bay Area, including an estimated $270 million to $360 million in Santa Clara County. Those projections hinted at the tournament’s scale, but they could never capture what it actually felt like to welcome the world.
It looked like crowded trains arriving hours before kickoff, flags from around the world, conversations between strangers, and fans proudly sharing a piece of home with everyone they met.
For a few unforgettable weeks, Santa Clara became a place where the world came together.

world cup by the numbers

Across those six matches, 12 goals were scored as supporters from around the world filled the stands and helped create an unforgettable atmosphere.
- 6 FIFA World Cup matches hosted at Levi’s® Stadium

The numbers tell one story. The people tell the rest.
The World Came to Santa Clara
One of the greatest privileges of hosting the FIFA World Cup was meeting the people who made the trip to Santa Clara.
Some traveled across oceans. Others came from across the country or just across the Bay. No matter where they came from, each person arrived carrying pride for the place they called home.
During the Austria versus Jordan match, we met a trio of Austrian friends whose excitement was contagious. As they made their way toward Levi’s® Stadium, they joked that their favorite Santa Clara memory would be watching Austria defeat Jordan while describing the city as “clean and organized” and saying everyone they had met had made them feel welcome.
They then enthusiastically taught us one of Austria’s best-known football chants, singing “Immer wieder, immer wieder, immer wieder Österreich!” (“Again and again, again and again, again and again, Austria!”). Hours later, Austria had defeated Jordan, making their lighthearted prediction come true.

的 Jordan versus Algeria match brought another memorable conversation. One supporter, originally from Algeria and now living in Boston, spoke with obvious pride about his home country. Within minutes, our conversation shifted from soccer to stories about Algeria’s culture, cuisine, and landscapes. He encouraged others to visit someday, a reminder that the World Cup gives people a chance to share far more than the team they’re cheering for.
That same spirit of appreciation continued after match day. Jordanian supporter Majd Abdeqader later commented on Discover Santa Clara’s Facebook page to thank the community for welcoming visitors during the tournament:
“Thank you Santa Clara for having us here. It was such a pleasure being in such a beautiful city. I would like to thank everyone responsible for organizing the matches and managing entry to and exit from the stadium, as well as all the police officers, who were absolutely wonderful and respectful, especially towards the fans. Thank you, and I hope to visit you again.”
For a destination, there is perhaps no greater compliment than hearing a visitor say they can’t wait to return.
By the time Santa Clara hosted its final World Cup match, the United States versus Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32, it felt as though the tournament had come full circle.
After weeks of watching supporters from every corner of the world fill the city with songs, flags, and traditions, the final match reminded us that every fan carries the same hope: to see the place they call home represented on the world’s biggest stage.
Levi’s® Stadium transformed into a sea of red, white, and blue. American flags waved throughout the stands as constant chants of “U-S-A” echoed across the stadium. Fans embraced the occasion in creative ways, arriving dressed as the Statue of Liberty, the Founding Fathers, bald eagles, and other American icons, adding another layer of personality to an already unforgettable atmosphere.

After spending weeks watching supporters from around the world proudly celebrate their home countries, Santa Clara’s final match served as a fitting conclusion. Different flags. Different languages. Different traditions. Yet every supporter shared the same excitement, the same anticipation, and the same pride in representing where they came from.
Every conversation was different, but they all shared something in common. Whether someone had traveled from another continent, another state, or another neighborhood, they brought a piece of home with them. For a few unforgettable weeks, they shared it with Santa Clara. In return, Santa Clara became part of their World Cup story.
Home, Even for a Moment
When people think back on 2026 年 FIFA 世界盃, they’ll remember the goals, the celebrations, and the matches.
But they’ll also remember the journey. The restaurants. The watch parties. The flags. The songs. The train ride to the stadium. The conversations with people from countries they had never visited.
For a few weeks in the summer of 2026, Santa Clara welcomed the world, not simply by hosting matches, but by creating a place where visitors and locals could come together through a shared love of the game.
And as Take Me Home, Country Roads echoed through Levi’s® Stadium following Santa Clara’s final World Cup match, it somehow said exactly what so many people were feeling.
For one unforgettable summer, Santa Clara wasn’t just a host city. It felt like home.
